Introduction to the 4 C's of Diamonds

When shopping for diamonds, it's essential to understand the "4 C's" – cut, color, clarity, and carat weight – which are the key criteria used to assess a diamond's quality and value. At Goldsmith Gallery Jewelers, we believe that knowing these fundamentals will help you make an informed decision, whether you’re selecting an engagement ring or an elegant diamond pendant. Developing an understanding of these four qualities of diamonds can help you make a fully informed decision when purchasing a diamond or piece of diamond jewelry.

Cut

The cut of a diamond is one of the most crucial factors in determining its brilliance and overall appearance. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, enhancing its sparkle and shine. The cut is not about the shape of the diamond (such as round, oval, or princess) but rather about how well the stone has been faceted and polished. Expertly cut diamonds will exhibit maximum brilliance by reflecting light internally and then dispersing it through the top of the stone. Poorly cut diamonds, however, can appear dull and lackluster.

Color

A diamond’s color is graded according to its tint on a scale from D (completely colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colorless diamonds are the rarest and therefore the most highly prized, while diamonds with noticeable color may be more affordable. Subtle differences in color can greatly affect a diamond’s appearance and value. Colorless diamonds reflect more light, offering a brighter, more brilliant look. However, some people prefer diamonds with a slight warmth in tone, as these can create a unique and beautiful look in certain jewelry settings.

Clarity

The presence of internal or external imperfections is measured in terms of clarity, indicating the degree of inclusions or blemishes. These natural characteristics are often microscopic and do not necessarily affect the diamond’s beauty to the naked eye. Clarity is graded on a scale ranging from Flawless (no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification) to Included (where imperfections are visible to the naked eye). The higher the clarity grade, the more rare and valuable the diamond.

Carat Weight

Carat weight refers to the actual weight of the diamond, with one carat equaling 0.2 grams. While many people think of carat weight as a measure of a diamond’s size, two diamonds of equal carat weight can look quite different based on their cut. Larger carat weights are often associated with higher value, but the other C’s – cut, color, and clarity – should be considered just as important when choosing a diamond. A diamond with a lower carat weight but excellent cut, color, and clarity can be just as stunning as a larger diamond with lesser quality in these areas.
